Almost everyone tracking their hair is tracking it by counting what falls out. It is the obvious thing to do, and it is close to useless.
Shed counts are noisy. They swing with how recently you washed, how you slept, the season, whether you brushed, and how carefully you looked. They measure hairs leaving, which tells you nothing about the caliber of the hairs staying. And they generate anxiety on a daily cycle for a process that moves on a quarterly one.
There is a better number, it takes thirty seconds, and it is used in actual clinical research.
The measurement
- Gather hair into a ponytail at a fixed, repeatable position on the head.
- Wrap a soft tape or a piece of string around the bundle, snug but not compressed.
- Record the circumference in millimetres.
- Repeat monthly under identical conditions.
- The number reflects both how many hairs you have and how thick each one is — the two things that actually determine coverage.
Why circumference is the right variable
A ponytail is a bundle of cylinders. Its circumference is a function of the summed cross-sectional area of every hair in it. Lose hairs and it shrinks. Keep the same number of hairs but lose shaft diameter and it also shrinks.
That combination is exactly what you want, because it maps directly onto what "thinner hair" means in ordinary use. It is a single number that captures both variables at once, which no other home measurement does.
It is also sensitive early. Because area scales with the square of the radius, a modest reduction in average shaft diameter produces a measurable circumference change well before any of it is visible in a mirror.
Doing it so the number means something
The measurement is only as good as its repeatability. Five things have to stay constant:
- Position. Same spot on the head every time. Higher on the crown gathers a different subset of hair than at the nape. Pick one, note it, never change it.
- Tension. Snug, not compressed. Compressing harder makes the number smaller and it is the easiest way to fake a trend in either direction.
- Hair state. Clean, dry, and product-free. Conditioner, oils, and styling products all change bundle thickness.
- Length. A significant cut changes the bundle. Note haircuts in your log — a drop right after a trim is a haircut, not hair loss.
- Interval. Monthly. Not weekly, and definitely not daily. The biology does not move faster than that and you will only be measuring noise.
What counts as a real change
A single reading means nothing. Two readings mean almost nothing. What you are looking for is a consistent direction across four to six months. Month-to-month variation of a millimetre or two is normal measurement noise, not a trend — and reacting to it is how people talk themselves into treatments they do not need.
Pairing it with a photograph
Circumference tells you about total volume. It does not tell you about distribution — you can lose density concentrated at the part or the crown while the bundle stays similar.
So pair it with one standardised photograph. Same room, same light source, same time of day, same camera distance, same parting. Natural indirect daylight is the most repeatable. Overhead bathroom lighting is the worst possible choice and will make the same head look dramatically different depending on nothing at all.
Take the photo, take the measurement, write both down, and then — this is the part people cannot do — do not look at either again for three months. Daily comparison on a process this slow is actively misleading. You cannot perceive the change, so you end up reading random variation as trend and making decisions on noise.
If your hair is too short to gather
The circumference method needs enough length to bundle. For shorter hair, the practical substitutes are a standardised photograph in fixed conditions and, if you want a real number, a dermatoscope reading from a clinician — which gives you hairs per square centimetre and shaft diameter directly, and is the measurement the ponytail test is approximating.
What is not a substitute is running your hands through your hair and forming an impression. That is the method almost everyone actually uses, and it is dominated by mood, lighting, and whatever you read that morning.
